I made for the rear stairway, then up to the second floor.

A guard snapped to attention as I entered the palace. I crossed the garden, out of the shade and into the slanting sunlight. I had assigned priorities and acted on them. It was not as if I had been nodding, as I saw it. But there had been so many things to do, from the very first. Time now to do something I should have done right away. This, now: a death to further jeopardize the brief, unhappy prereign of Corwin I: me. The court of Amber, full of suspicion and unrest. The guards saw me coming, held a brief discussion, and looked the other way. Also, a couple of guards were passing among the bushes near the trail. There were a few idlers beside the fountain at the far end of the garden. Some spiritual form of compound interest, I suppose. Of troubles I considered myself amply possessed. I would still be spotted, but it would be a lot less awkward than going in the front way, where things are always busy. I skirted the exercise area and made my way to the trail that led toward the southern end of the palace gardens. Hell would soon be demanding its paycheck. My cloak could not really conceal the nature of its contents as I slung the guts over my shoulder and stamped off toward the rear entrance to the palace. I ignored the questions in the eyes of the groom as I lowered the grisly parcel and turned the horse in for care and maintenance. Apparently there’s some kind of big change after book five. Even though each novel has a different vibe, they each play into aspects of the previous. The mystery of Corwin’s time on the Shadow world Earth and its connection to the political maneuvering and multiverse-shaking troubles has become an onion, continually revealing new layers.Ī really fascinating story so far, it works as one continuous story. I like that the amnesia from the first book is still echoing through the pages of the third. This time around, it’s a sort of who-done-it, along with the deepening conspiracies. So far, each book has had a very different vibe and different plot structure. You can’t accuse Zelazny of repeating himself. Secrets I assumed would take several books to be revealed are already out, but new, deeper secrets are growing. I really have no idea where things are going to go in this series. The third book in Roger Zelazny’s sprawling Amber series throws a lot of new twists at our narrator.
